Tennessee American Water Lead Service Line Survey – What Hill City Residents Need to Know

Important Update: Tennessee American Water Asking Residents to Check Their Water Service Lines for Lead

Hill City Neighbors,

Tennessee American Water is currently building a comprehensive inventory of lead service lines across our area. This is part of a nationwide effort to identify and eventually replace any remaining lead pipes in our water system to ensure safe drinking water for all families.

Why This Matters to Us

Many homes in Hill City were built before 1988, when lead-based materials were more commonly used in plumbing. While the water provided by Tennessee American Water meets strict safety standards, older customer-owned service lines (the pipes connecting your home to the main water line in the street) may contain lead.

The good news? Tennessee American Water is making it easy for residents to check and report their service line material.

How to Check and Report Your Water Service Line (3 Easy Steps)

1.  Visit the website or scan the QR code on the flyer you may have received:

2.  Search for your address and follow the instructions to identify your service line material. If you’re unsure, you can upload a photo of where your water line enters your home (usually in the basement, crawl space, or garage).

3.  Submit your report.

This information helps the utility create an accurate map of where lead lines may still exist so they can prioritize replacements.

Quick Facts

•  The utility owns the portion of the pipe from the water main to your property line (meter box).

•  You, the homeowner, own the portion from the meter box into your home.

•  Homes built before 1930 and before March 1988 are more likely to have lead components.

Simple Steps You Can Take Now to Reduce Lead Exposure

Even if lead is present, there are easy actions you can take:

•  Flush your taps for 30 seconds to 2 minutes if water has been sitting unused for 6+ hours.

•  Use cold water for drinking and cooking.

•  Remove and clean faucet aerators regularly.

•  Consider installing NSF 53 certified water filters.

Important Note: Finding lead in your service line does not mean your water is unsafe right now. Tennessee American Water continues to test and treat water to meet all federal and state safety standards.

We’ll keep you updated as more information becomes available.

Together, we can help ensure Hill City continues to be a safe, healthy, and vibrant place to live.
